Using Sensitive Regulated Data

All new faculty and staff, and incoming students to the College of Engineering are provided with an U-M Google account as the primary account for managing their U-M email ( As part of the work they will be doing at the College, it may be necessary for individuals to use Sensitive Regulated Data that is not permitted to be sent, received, or stored in Google accounts due to federal regulations. This includes export controlled data (e.g. ITAR and EAR) as well as personal health information (PHI). In addition, other sponsored research contractual agreements may restrict the use of Google for communications; for example, a contract that expressly prohibits the use of third-party email systems.

Individuals who will be using these types of data should consult their departmental IT support staff for assistance in finding compliant alternatives to U-M Google. Available U-M hosted services currently include ITS Exchange and Mainstream Storage services (both are fee-based services).

Questions or concerns about this data usage can be directed to the College's Director of Compliance and Policy, Elizabeth Wagner (
