Android Gmail App

Before you begin configuring an Android device to access a user's U-M Google Account, you must first Enable IMAP Access on the account. Once this is done, you should also identify the user as an Archiver or Deleter. This is important because how they choose to handle messages when they are marked for deletion (i.e. archive, or move to Trash) will impact how they manage their mail across other IMAP client(s) they may use, and how the client(s) should be configured. We have provided the recommended settings for both Archivers and Deleters below.

Configuring the Android Gmail App

  1. Start the Gmail App.
  2. Tap the Menu button, and select Accounts.
  3. Tap Add Account.
  4. Select Google from the list of account types.
  5. Tap Next.
  6. Tap the Sign in button, and log in:
    Username: user's uniqname@umich.edu email address
    Password: user's UMICH.EDU Kerberos password
  7. To sync the account data to the device, select the boxes next to Sync Gmail, Sync Contacts, and Sync Calendar. Note that some of these selections are optional. If you do not wish to sync the Calendar or Contacts, leave those boxes unchecked.
  8. Tap Finish.

Archiving and Deleting Messages with an Android

The Gmail App provides buttons for both Archive and Delete at the top of the screen:

Be aware that these buttons act upon the entire selected conversation thread, rather than a single message, similar to what is described when Using a Web Browser: Messages vs. Conversations.

Google Apps Device Policy

For College of Engineering faculty and staff, we recommend installing the Google Apps Device Policy on an Android device. This free app is available on the Google Play Apps Store, and allows a lost or stolen device to be remotely locked or wiped in emergencies. For more information, refer to the Device Policy for Android support page.
